The classic version of this delicious street food, perfect as a quick lunch or dinner or as a hearty snack<\/strong>, consists of pork (or chicken) and other ingredients wrapped in a pita. Pita is nothing more than a round, mashed loaf, thicker and more tender than the pita used to make Arabic kebab. The cost of a classic Greek pita gyros varies between \u20ac 2.00 and \u20ac 3.00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it is prepared<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

On a pointed rod, slices of meat of various shapes and sizes are placed one above the other until the rod is completely covered. The block of meat thus created is placed in an appliance that slowly cooks the outer layers of the meat block by rotating (the name gyros refers to the rotating movement of the appliance<\/strong>). The meat is cut continuously before it burns with a large knife or with an automatic machine and collected in a tray. The classic gyros pita is made of pork, in Greek it is called pita chirino<\/strong> [\u03c0\u03af\u03c4\u03b1 \u03c7\u03bf\u03b9\u03c1\u03b9\u03bd\u03cc] There are variations which are the gyros pita with chicken (pita kotopoulo<\/strong> [\u03c0\u03af\u03c4\u03b1 \u03ba\u03bf\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c5\u03bb\u03bf]) or with meat skewers (pita souvlaki<\/strong> \u03c3\u03bf\u03c5\u03b2\u03bb\u03ac\u03ba\u03b9]). The other ingredients of the gyros pita are: tomato, chips and onions and tzatziki sauce [\u03c4\u03b6\u03b1\u03c4\u03b6\u03af\u03ba\u03b9]. Those who do not like the taste of tzatziki due to the presence of garlic, can replace it with tirokafteri [\u03c4\u03c5\u03c1\u03bf\u03ba\u03b1\u03c6\u03c4\u03b5\u03c1\u03ae], cream of feta cheese and hot pepper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After having tried so many of them all over the island, we believe that this year the award for best pita gyros in Zakynthos <\/strong>goes to Ladolemono. This small family-run Psitopoleio (steakhouse) was opened in 2017 by Andreas Vithoulkas. In addition to preparing the best pita in Zakynthos<\/strong>, still cooked on the grill, at Ladolemono you will also find lamb, chicken and pork cooked on a spit <\/strong>at lunchtime. Among the house specialties to try we recommend the Kotobacon <\/strong>(chicken skewers wrapped in bacon), Kotosouvli <\/strong>(skewers of chicken or pork marinated with Mediterranean spices and herbs and enriched with vegetables) and the classic Souvlaki <\/strong>(pork or chicken skewers) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
