What to do in Argassi and its surrounding areas
Argassi is a small tourist resort located 3km south of Zakynthos Town. In recent years it has become one of the most popular destinations in Zakynthos, thanks to its proximity to the capital and its privileged location as a central departure point for all other destinations on the island, especially the beaches Vasilikos area. Argassi mainly extends along the coast and around its main street, which is full of bars, restaurants, rental shops and souvenir shops. This location is suitable for everyone: young people, couples and families.
What to Do in Argassi
The beach certainly isn’t Argassi strongest point. In fact, although the Argassi Beach is sandy and the water is shallow, making it suitable for children, not all areas are accessible. Of the many hotels close to the beach, some allow access to the public, but others do not. The hotels and restaurants that allow access offer the option of renting deck chairs and umbrellas.
Argassi’s main street is lined with pubs, restaurants, rental shop, tour offices and souvenir shops. The most famous bar is the Avalon whereas the most popular club is the Magic Mushroom, where some locals gather in the late evening.
The main feature of the Argassi beach is an old Venetian bridge which dates back to 1805. This bridge was once part of a road that hugged the coast north to south. With the passing of time, much of the road has disappeared, leaving behind a crumbling, but still imposing, bridge surrounded by sea water.
What to Do Around Argassi
One Argassi’s strong points is the proximity to the most popular and famous nightclub in Zakynthos, the Barrage. The main events are on Tuesdays and Fridays, when over 1,000 people gather to attend the most famous parties in Zakynthos. Other clubs near the Barrage are the Minima, the Cebu and the Gatsby mainly popular with Greeks.
Hiking on Mount Skopos
Mount Skopos rises behind Argassi. The hike to the summit, which offers spectacular views of Laganas Bay, takes about an hour. At the top you can visit the Panagia Skopiotissa Temple built on the site of the ancient Artemis temple. It is an excellent spot to enjoy a breathtaking sunset over Laganas Bay, when the sky and the sea turn all shades of pink and orange. More information on “Hiking on Mount Skopos“.
