The beaches of Vasilikos
Vasilikos peninsula is an area located in the south-eastern part of Zakynthos Island. It includes four villages: Xirocastello, Agios Ioannis, Ano Vasilikos and Vasilikos. This area begins south of the village of Argassi and has fortunately escaped large-scale construction development due to the fact that Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs on some of the beaches of this peninsula, such as Sekania, Dafni and Gerakas. In Vasilikos you will find some of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches of Zakynthos, as well as some of the most popular and best-equipped beaches on the island. Here is the list of all the beaches of Vasilikos:
Kaminia
Kaminia beach is located at the foot of the village of Xirocastello. This small strip of sand is mainly frequented by locals and tourists staying in the villas and apartments in the area. The seabed is shallow and the water is warm and clear. Umbrellas and deck chairs are free if you order something at the bar and there are also some games for children on the lawn of the restaurant. Suitable for families or for those seeking tranquility.
Dafni
Dafni is the wildest beach of Vasilikos and among the less touristy beaches of the island of Zakynthos, in fact many are discouraged by the dirt road that must be taken to reach it and taxis and buses do not go to this beach. This beach is part of zone A of the Marine Park of Zakynthos, consequently boats and excursions cannot enter this area allowing you to swim undisturbed for hundreds of meters. Here the Caretta Caretta turtles come to lay their eggs, so you will find hundreds of nests protected by wooden cages. In Dafni beach you will hear only the sound of the sea and the summer breeze. The shallow waters, clear and warm, are rich in fish and very suitable for couples, families, those seeking tranquility and lovers of snorkeling and nature
Sekania
The only beach in Vasilikos and the whole island of Zakynthos that is not accessible to tourists is Sekania. This pristine beach is the beach with the largest number of turtle nests and is constantly monitored by marine park volunteers.
Banana Baya (Banana Beach)
Continuing to go down south, after Porto Zorro we find the entrance to Banana Baya. This is the first beach of Vasilikos which is divided into Banana Baya and Casa Playa. This Beach Bar is the culmination of a dream of Giannis Giannoulis, the manager, who has always wanted a bar with a sea view. The sandy Banana beach is one of the longest on the island and offers any service, from watersports (jet skis, water skiing, parachutes, etc.) to sunbeds and umbrellas with catering service. The menu of food and cocktails is updated and changed every year by the owner, for the satisfaction of the customers. Here too, as in all of Vasilikos, the water is warm but the shallow and sandy bottoms have no vegetation or marine life. Recommended for young people, couples and families looking for a more eventful day. Banana Beach is connected by the KTEL public bus service that connects it to Zakynthos town (ticket of € 1.80).
Casa Playa (Banana Beach)
You will find signs advertising for this beach and Beach Bar everywhere throughout the island of Zakynthos. A free shuttle service, organized by the owners of the establishment, connects it to the resorts of Argassi, Kalamaki and Laganas. The beach is exactly the same as in Banana Baya and here too you will find sunbeds and umbrellas (prices for 2 sun loungers and 1 umbrella from € 8). Watersports of “Banana Watersports” are also within walking distance. The water is warm but the shallow and sandy bottoms have no vegetation or marine life. Recommended for young people, couples and families looking for a more eventful day. Here you will find the free shuttle bus timetables.
Agios Nikolaos o San Nicolaos
Continuing to go down south, a few kilometers from Casa Playa you will find the Agios Nikolaos Beach. This beach, as well as the competitor Casa Playa, is highly advertised throughout the island and here too the managers offer a free shuttle service that connects it to the locations of Argassi, Kalamaki and Laganas, while a public service connects it to the city of Zakynthos. The well-equipped beach offers everything from sun loungers and umbrellas (prices for 2 sun loungers and 1 umbrella from € 8) to watersports. Here there are 2 establishments, St. Nicolas Beach Bar – frequented mostly by tourists – and Amnos, frequented mainly by locals. The beach is sandy, but the shallow and warm waters are devoid of vegetation and marine life. The peculiarity of this area is the small church close to the sea, on the left of the beach. From here the numerous photos with #stnicholasbeach are taken. Here you will find the timetables of the free shuttle.
Mavratzi
Mavratzi is a small sandy beach frequented mostly by tourists staying in the mega resort above. The only establishment on the beach offers beach umbrellas and sunbeds (prices for 2 sunbeds and 1 umbrella from € 6). Perhaps the least interesting of Vasilikos, the beach is sandy as well as the seabed. The rugged coastline to the left and right of the beach is teeming with numerous fish, perfect for snorkelers, recommended for families and those in search of tranquility.
Porto Roma
Porto Roma is one of the less frequented beaches in Zakynthos, due to the small size of the beach and the quality of the services offered here. But very few are aware that this is one of the places where you can meet the Monk Seal! For snorkelers and nature lovers, we recommend a nice swim on the right of the beach towards the Ákra Kalogkéra peninsula. With a little luck you will meet this very rare specimen. In case luck is not on your side do not dramatize, you will still have seen a considerable amount of marine life in these particularly rich waters.
Gerakas
We finally reach the end. After crossing fields of olive trees, the road ends on the last beach of Vasilikos, Gerakas. Like Dafni, it is part of the Marine Park zone A and the Park Volunteers, at the entrance, will explain the rules to be followed. Here you will find a pristine sandy beach with crystal clear waters. The very few umbrellas and deckchairs for a fee are managed directly by the park. Once all are booked you will only be able to put a towel, at a maximum, and no more than 3 meters from the shore, to avoid damaging the turtle eggs. Gerakas is perfect for those who love swimming: thanks to the prohibition of navigation for boats, long undisturbed swims await you. For couples, families with children and for those looking for tranquility and unspoiled nature.
